EJQUIMPO AR+D - INSTITUTIONAL PROJECTS
CHURCH OF THE HOLY FAMILY
Karuhatan, Valenzuela City. Philippines

In 2003, the quasi-parish of Karuhatan Valenzuela decided to construct a new church after aquiring the adjacent lot to replace the existing chapel to accommodate the steadily increasing number of parishoners especially on Sundays.

The architect's vision is to construct a "Filipino Church" that will symbolize and embody the filipino's faith, culture, strong family ties, and a united community in the spirit of bayanihan, wherein all members of the community will contribute in the realization of the project.

The idea was to incorporate traditional forms, concepts and materials to the design. Large wooden door and window openings, adapting the traditional forms of capiz windows into the steel and glass windows, with the bahay kubo and bahay na bato as the framework for the design as shown in the proportion, roof slope and use of extrusions and canopies for the openings. Natural lighting and ventilation are also a major factor in the final design of the church.
